How to choose a Rc Car or Truck That’s Right for You

There are a number of different things that need to be considered whenever you’re trying to choose the right RC car or truck for you. Of course, nobody is going to be able to make the final determination as it is going to be something that will have to match your likes and dislikes, but there are a few guidelines that you can follow which will help to make the decision making process much easier.

One of the first things that you should look at is whether you are going to get a toy grade RC car or if you are going to go with a professional grade. The toy grade cars are much less expensive than the professional, but they also tend to be much more delicate whenever you are running them regularly. If you’re buying an RC car for a child or if you only plan on running it once or twice in order to see if you like the hobby, you may want to start out with a toy model. On the other hand, if you plan on running the RC car regularly, spend a little bit of extra money and get the professional grade model.

The type of engine is also a consideration, and you have either electric or Nitro powered to choose from. The electric is one that you see in most department stores, and you will probably have to go to a hobby shop or shop on the Internet in order to find a Nitro powered RC car. Either of these can really work well, but you will get much less usage out of the electric RC car because of downtime while you are charging. If you plan on running it for an entire day, make sure that you have spare batteries and a charger with you. A Nitro car, on the other hand, simply needs refueled and you are back on the track again.

One final consideration is whether you are going to get one that is ready to run, right out of the box (RTR) or if you’re going to get a kit. A kit is a good idea for those that like to tinker and want to figure out the inner workings of the RC car. An RTR RC car, on the other hand, is an excellent idea for somebody that just wants to open the box and began racing.

So you are thinking of getting a RC truck? Don?t till you read this!

So you are thinking of getting a RC truck? Don?t till you read this!

1ST you’re going to have to decide what type of RC truck.

RC trucks come in Electric – Nitro – petrol versions, and the fun you’ll have is priceless. Rc trucks are awesome and most come with big chunky wheels and 4WD, shock absorbers and more.

Electric rc trucks are RTR (ready to run) and you just need to charge up the batteries and go !

They can be used indoors or outside, trucks are great off road and can go over rock, mud, woodland, parks and grass. Also are good on road and can be raced with other rc trucks, with Electric models there is little noise and the maintance is much lower than Nitro.
Speeds of 30 mph and more if modified and stunts an jumps with these are excellent fun but be sure not to drive your truck though any water as it will fry your electrics or servo !

I recommend covering the electric cables and any exposed wires with electrical tape and a good tip is to use a normal balloon and cover the electric receiver to make it water tight. Also check the screws are all tight and you can also use clear silicone to seal the box cover lid and any gaps.

Cleaning the rc truck after each run is essential and a good tool to get in all the little places is to use a toothbrush, just make sure to get all dirt, mud ect off and do a visual check all over. Don’t forget to check the batteries in the controller are fresh or fully charged or you may lose control on the truck or worse head over towards a lake or smash into something and cause damage..

So i strongly suggest for starters using “rechargeable batteries” as it will cost you a lot of money as they tend not to last too long and as you know good batteries are not cheap. Also you’ll always know the batteries are full and fresh.

there are two main types of electric motors- Brushed and Brushless.

With a brushed motor there are small contact brushes inside the motor that make it spin and are common on toy grade trucks, some can have replaceable brushes that can be fitted and cleaning is needed as dust and debris builds up inside.

Brushless motors are becoming more popular now as there are more benefits as there are no brushes, so there is much less friction and therefore produces less heat so you can go longer running your vehicle and more importantly it will be faster ! Yes as a brushless motor can take more voltage than a brushed one so speed and performance is far better and your be less likely to burn out the motor by overheating. Brushless is much worth the extra bit of money and your save in the long run. Electric rc trucks are best for beginners and children to start off with.

NITRO RC TRUCKS
Nitro trucks are powered by a special nitro fuel which can easily be bought from a hobby shop or online and it is worth the extra effort. With nitro models there is much more maintence like checking tires, air filter and empty any nitro fuel left in the tank, as not doing so or investing the extra time needed could destroy the engine.

Like a normal NEW car you have to run the engine in slowly and this is the same for any new nitro radio controlled vehicle, so be sure to read the instructions well or research about nitro models as this can get costly if you just go and blast it around and blow the engine up. But hey let me tell you Nitro rc trucks are fast, noisy and can keep refuelling and going.
Nitro rc trucks can reach speeds of 70 mph and some come with full specification like 2 speed gearbox, 4WD tough alloy shocks and cool body shells.

Because of the fuel and speed of nitro trucks they are not for children under 14 years old. This is a great hobby and if speed is you then nitro is the way to go.

Petrol rc trucks
Petrol rc trucks run on unleaded petrol and 2 stroke oil which can be bought from any petrol forecourt and normally when you buy a petrol rc truck you’re get a mixing bottle to mix up the right mixture but these are great trucks like the hummer rc truck for example: the sizes are normally bigger 1/5th scale and these trucks can do jumps, spins and can do speeds of 80 KM/H.

The smell of the petrol burning away is the closest your get to the real thing but petrol models are the most expensive of all the 3 to buy but are second to none for racing and give the feel of the real thing.

How to Tune your Nitro Engine on your Radio Controlled cars and trucks.

If you would like to be able to tune a Nitro engine, you first need to make sure that you familiarize yourself with the various components. Although there are going to only be a few adjustments that really need to be made in order to tune one of these engines properly, each of them is going to be important in the overall tuning process.

The carburetor is where the gas and air is mixed and this mixture is sent into the engine in order to be burned as fuel. The mixture can be adjusted by a small screw that is located on the carburetor. If you turn the screw clockwise, you are reducing the amount of fuel in the mixture and making it “lean”. If you turn the screw counter clockwise, you are increasing the percentage of fuel in the mixture and making it “rich”.A lean mixture is going to give you better performance whenever your car is on the track.

Making it too lean, however, is going to cause you have problems with your engine cutting out.
When you make the mixture too rich, the engine is not going to be able to burn all of the gas
that is in the mixture efficiently, and your car is going to smoke. It can take a little bit of playing in order to get the mixture right, but once you hit it, it will make a difference in the performance of the RC car.

The high and low speed adjustments are going to now need set. There is a high speed adjustment
screw that should be located on the fuel line. Begin adjusting this screw by turning it in 1/16 increments. You may need to adjust the carburetor in order to make these two work
together so that you have maximum efficiency. The low speed idle screw should also be adjusted so that when you pinch the fuel line, the RC car or truck runs for no more than 2 to 3 seconds.

The final adjustment that you’re going to make to tune your Nitro engine is the idle speed.
This adjustment screw is located underneath the oil filter and it should be adjusted as low as
possible without your engine stalling out whenever it is idling.

Make sure that you tune your Nitro RC car and truck engine in the order that is specified above. You may need to run through the process a few times in order to get everything to work well together. Once your Nitro engine is tuned, however, it will be much more efficient
whenever it is on the track.

RC Cars And Trucks,Your Toolbox.

Firstly we are going to discuss what tools you should have in your tool chest for you to be able to preform any maintenance, repairs or servicing to your RC Cars and Trucks. Or even if you are building a kit these tools will go a far in helping you maintaining you Radio Controlled car or truck. To kick off with, make a sure to try and acquire yourself a robust toolbox, if you do not already possess the majority the tools you will require, ensure get a large enough tool box to take in all your tools, and one that has miniature trays. This will keep all your small parts and tools in one location and not on the floor or in the dirt outside. Nothing worse than losing something while you are out and about, as you do not have reliable storage space to keep things in place. Those trolly tool chests are cool too,and it’s effortless to cart around.

Secondly, depending on whether you own an electric or a nitro radio controlled car the contents of your toolbox will be slightly different. But as far as the tools go needed to work on the vehicle itself they will be the same for both. For the electric car, you will have your battery chargers, dischargers and a good quality multimeter you can not try and resolve an electrical issue not having one of these. And don’t stress for the kind of tests you may need to do on your car or equipment it is relatively easy. A soldering gun is also very nifty to have in your toolbox, and remember the solder. You can get miniature sized ones that uses butane gas, so no mains power needed to make use of them. But it is a fine tool to acquire anyway, because they come with a blow torch and hot knife which is useful in this hobby.

RC Cars and Trucks, you will need a starter kit which has, fuel pump, crosses, charger, glow plug, screwdrivers. You can get these in kits and is reasonably standard across the range. A starter box is also valuable to have and it is still the easiest way to start you Nitro engine. It is not needed if your nitro engine has a pull start or like some cars that have a built in starting system. A robust fuel container to carry and store your fuel in. Bear in mind that the fuel used is exceptionally flammable and should be handled with respect. The most general tools you can acquire in kits, but you want it to have a mini pair of longnose pliers, tweezers, precision screwdrivers, magnetic pickup tool, scissors, tiny tube spanner set, little wrench set. There is a lot extra you can add to your tool chest, but you will get to know what you will require for your kit as you grow.

Just keep in mind if you use the wrong tools on your vehicle you are not only going to spoil your vehicle and parts, you will not be able to take care of it flawlessly and it is going to cost you more than it should have.

How to run in your Nitro Engine.

RC Cars and Trucks come with a load of different Nitro motors now days, but the top thing you can do for your motor is to prepare it for a prolonged life and top performance by running it in correctly.

Buying a brand new RC car or truck can be quite an exciting period, but you want to make sure that you don’t overdo it at first as it can significantly reduce the motor life. In fact, running in an RC car motor is one of the first things that you ought to perform, and there are a variety of different ways that this is completed. Of course, everybody is going to have their own outlook but here are only some that seem to be more reasonable.

One method of how to break in your Radio controlled vehicle motor is to permit it to idle through a whole tank of fuel and then to run it at half throttle on the following tank. By the third tank, according to this method, you are set to open it up and start running at full speed. An alternative method is to run it as rich as workable for a few tanks prior to you commence to lean it out and run it as you normally would. A third method, one that we will discuss in further detail is to cycle the motor heat prior to you begin running it at full throttle.

If you’re going to cycle the temperature of the motor in order to run it in, you need to hit a target temperature of approximately 190F. This is somewhat effortless to do if you are running it outdoors on a warm day, but there may be occasions when you want to cover the heat sink, either with aluminum foil or with heat tape. This can assist you to get up to temperature sooner, but be carefull that you don’t overdo it. Ensure that you permit the motor to cool adequately amid runs, and go on with the cycle for five times. You can either do this with the motor idling or by running some easy figure eights, being careful not to overdo it on the accelerator.

After you run through these five cycles of approximately 15 minute intervals, you must carry on to run through an further three cycles of approximately 5 minutes. As soon as that happens, your motor should be correctly run in and you’re set to open it up on the track.

Of course, this is only one way of how to break in your RC car or truck engine and there may be other ways that you want to use as well. The most crucial thing, however, is that you do permit for some break in time for your motor in order to prevent a lot of breakdowns further down the track.
